Sophia Dales

Lawyer

Sophia is a lawyer at McCarthy Hansen & Company LLP, where she practises in all areas of family law. She has appeared before various courts and administrative tribunals in Ontario.

Sophia became a family law lawyer almost ten years into her legal career. Raising two young children motivated her to practise family law, in part because it has given her a new appreciation for the complexity of navigating relationships and parenting in the modern economy.

Sophia strives for excellence in her advocacy and representation of her clients. She has achieved successful results for clients in court and in mediation / arbitration.

Prior to joining McCarthy Hansen & Company LLP, Sophia practised in class actions and commercial litigation at a top litigation boutique in Toronto where she was counsel on many high-profile class actions, including a syndicated mortgage fraud case and the Ontario “birth alerts” class action.

Sophia brings her private practice experience in torts, class actions, damages, business law, shareholders’ disputes, defamation (anti-SLAPP litigation), and insurance to her family law practice and in service of her clients.

Sophia obtained her law degree at the University of Ottawa in 2014. She was called to the bar of Ontario in 2015.

During law school, Sophia earned the highest academic grade in the course International Human Rights Law for her thesis paper. The paper examines how sexual orientation and gender identity, which the United Nations has recognized as international human rights, are enforced – or not – by different nation states. Sophia received the International Commission of Jurists’ award for her scholarship.

Sophia is a member of the Education Committee of the Toronto Lawyers Association and The Advocates’ Society. Sophia loves to ski and is an active member of her ski community with her husband and children.
