Each year, the Law Society of Upper Canada awards its top honour — the Law Society Medal — to selected lawyers who have made a significant contribution to the profession. On May 29, 2013, Martha McCarthy received this honour at a special ceremony.The award is given for outstanding service within the profession, whether in the area of practice, in the academic sphere, or in some other professional capacity where the service is in accordance with the highest ideals of the legal profession. It may be awarded for devotion to professional duties over a long term or for a single outstanding act of service.The team at Martha McCarthy & Company LLP congratulate Martha on this tremendous honour.

The induction ceremony took place recently before an audience of approximately 1,070 persons during the recent 2012 Annual Meeting of the College in New York, New York.Membership in the College cannot exceed one percent of the total lawyer population of any state or province. There are currently approximately 5,838 members in the United States and Canada, including active Fellows, Emeritus Fellows, Judicial Fellows and Honorary Fellows. The College strives to improve and elevate the standards of trial practice, the administration of justice and the ethics of the trial profession. Qualified lawyers are called to Fellowship in the College from all branches of trial practice. The college is thus able to speak with a balanced voice on important issues affecting the legal profession and the administration of justice.

Martha McCarthy, along with Richard Wilson (Moderator), Mark Harper and Charlotte Burtuille-Cardew, will be speaking about The Current State of the Law of Marriage, its Equivalents, and Dissolution in Three Separate Legal Traditions: North America (US and Canada); The United Kingdom; and Civil Law, in France, Europe and beyond.

Martha McCarthy will be presenting on Thursday, April 19, 2012 at the American Bar Association Section of Family Law, 2012 Spring CLE Conference in South Beach, Florida.

Martha will be speaking about Equal Marriage in North America: Nine Years On.

The program examines the progress of law reform in this area and the unique legal issues confronting same-sex couples from one jurisdiction to another.
